The legend of Tikchik Narrows Lodge often lives in the dreams of a few and the whispers of many. But for friends like Chip King, the legend became legacy—because he didn't just help build it, he lived it. Everything we love about this place—fishing hard, exploring deep, and being fully immersed in a world untouched by most—wasn't folklore to Chip. It was real life. For more than two decades, Chip was a core part of the Tikchik family, including over 15 years as head guide, setting the tone on the water and beyond.
Chip guided alongside his brother Breon for roughly 25 years in Alaska, and together they shaped generations of anglers and guides. He was a true leader—one who quietly influenced countless guides who passed through Tikchik, and who connected hundreds of guests to the magic of Bristol Bay. Chip loved Alaska deeply; it was part of who he was. He was light-hearted and could light up the dance floor at a moment's notice. Above all else, he was an exceptional guide with a genuine love for fishing and for sharing Alaska with others. Good-natured, kind, and steady, Chip left his mark on this place and on all of us who were lucky enough to know him. His legacy will always live on in these waters.
For those who never had the privilege of meeting him, you can still experience a piece of his legacy. When you step into the river and your guide mentions Chip's braid, Chip's bluff, or Chip's hole, you'll be standing in water he understood differently than most—and shared passionately with everyone.
